" The literature is like a game of chess ", affirms Javier Cercas

The Extremaduran writer presents the translation to the Italian of ' The mobile '

The Extremaduran writer Javier Cercas, who has just presented in Italy his novel The mobile, thinks that the literature is " as a game of chess " that can change the reality.

The mobile translated in Italian as Il movente, is the first novel of Cercas, written in 1987, and tells the history of a wishing young man to writer that he arranges the reality and the persons who they make a detour to his whim, in such a way that they inspire him in the statement that it tries to write.

In an interview published yesterday by The Stampa, of Turin, the author defines this work " a book I am not absent of black, very enterteining humor ", and indicates that his statement and the literature in general are like a game of chess, where the prominent figures are moving in interest of the plot.

" Somehow the principal personage is autobiographical ", is assured by him, after tinting that when he wrote The mobile he was 25 years old and in certain way " it was living in the same way as Alvaro, was thinking that only the literature existed " and that only she could give him the sense of the reality.

There have been writers, some very known, that used the game of the chess and your rules as plot in some of his novels, though in few ones really. We have chosen the following ones:
Vladimir Nabokov y ‘La defensa’.

Vladimir Nabokov and ' The defense '. The novel has been taken to the cinema by the title of The defense Luzhin. Alexander Luzhin treats herself about the life of the great teacher of chess, that he prepares itself to face the Italian Turati. Alexander concerns to the category of crazy player: a prodigy in the board and an absent-minded person out of him. One tells us her infancy and her passion for the chess and the psychological profile of the player of this game. It is approached even in the description of plays. The plot of the novel is skilfully handled by this Russian teacher of the letters. It is known by your creation of problems of chess.

Nabokov was born in Saint Petersburg but he acquired literary reputation with your first novel, Lolita, written in English. This novel has been taken to the cinema in different versions. In his family one was speaking Russian, English and Frenchman since he was a child.

This writer has been in addition a famous literary critic and a well-known translator (he has translated four volumes of the Eugene Onegin, of Aleksandr Pushkin).

Your works are likewise A Pale fire; The wizard; Pnin; Sebastian Knight's real life and others.

When we speak about Nabokov's works we do it of masterpieces of the universal literature. It is when less shoking that a Russian author is one of the best writers in English language. For me always it is a delight to have between the hands Nabokov's novel and to enjoy her reading.

Jorge Luis Borges y ‘Ajedrez’.

Jorge Luis Borges and 'Chess'. It imposes real respect to approach though it is on tiptoe to the grand figure of this illustrious Argentinian, one of the glories of the letters in the Spanish language, maximum literary exponent of the 20th century, who lived 87 years strictly between ourselves. He has been a writer, essayist and poet of universal height and the intellectual one of the first order. Some day I will do a sense to him honoring and mostraré from my modest knowledge what aspects, which are great, have impressed always in him. For example, I will enjoy tying Borges and Buenos Aires, I that I am so inclined to this type of indissoluble marriages.

But the binomial has brought us here writer - chess. In Borges this binomial is present in your poem Chess, deeply, as everything what Borges has written, that he says this way:

I

I

In her serious corner, the players govern the slow pieces. The board delays them up to the dawn in your severe area in which two colors are hated.

Adentro irradian mágicos rigores
las formas: torre homérica, ligero
caballo, armada reina, rey postrero,
oblicuo alfil y peones agresores.

In magic rigors radiate the forms: Homeric rook, light knight, navy queen, last king, oblique bishop and pawns aggressors.

Cuando los jugadores se hayan ido,
cuando el tiempo los haya consumido,
ciertamente no habrá cesado el rito.

When the players have gone away, when the time has consumed them, certainly it will not have stopped the rite.

En el Oriente se encendió esta guerra
cuyo anfiteatro es hoy toda la tierra.
Como el otro, este juego es infinito.

In the East there was ignited this war which amphitheatre is today all the land.
As other one, this game is infinite.

II

Tenue rey, sesgo alfil, encarnizada
reina, torre directa y peón ladino
sobre lo negro y blanco del camino
buscan y libran su batalla armada.

II

Tenuous king, I slant bishop, fierce queen, direct rook and cunning pawn on black and white of the way look and free his armed battle.

No saben que la mano señalada
del jugador gobierna su destino,
no saben que un rigor adamantino
sujeta su albedrío y su jornada.

They do not know that the notable hand of the player governs his destiny, do not know that a rigor adamantino holds his discretion and her day.

Also the player is a prisoner (the judgment belongs to Omar) of another board of black nights and of white days.

God moves the player, and this one, the piece.
What god does behind God the plot begin of powder and time and dream and agonies?

In 1979 Cervantes was granted to him the Prize and, before and later, other many awards, but the Nobel prize of Literature was not granted her, unjustly to my way of seeing.

Stefan Zweig and ' Novel of chess '. Austrian writer of novels, stories and biographies. It was very popular in the decade 1920-1930. It was born in Vienna in the bosom of a Jewish well-off family. Hetook doctor's degree on philosophy on the University of Vienna. It was the intellectual one compromised opposite to the nationalistic commanding doctrines in the epoch.

Novel of chess is probably his more famous novel. During his development a game of chess takes place between Mirko, who without capacity for any other intellectual activity, was revealed already from child as a genius of the chess, having managed to be a champion of the world. In a trip to Buenos Aires by ship Viennese, his opponent knows a noble in the game, which flees of the Nazi. The author us presents the shock of two antagonistic natures and also the capacity of the human being submitted to a pressure of extraordinary level. A few few facts masterfully and of intriguing form.

Zweig wrote plays and poetry and did translations of known authors, but it was more prolific of the kind of the novel. We can mention between these, besides Novel of chess, the following biographies and novels: Maria Estuardo; Maria Antonieta; Erasmus; Magellan's history; Three teachers: Balzac, Dickens, Dostoievski; star Moments of the humanity; The fight against the demon; Twenty-four hours in the life of a woman; etc.

Literature and Chess in the 21st century. Part First/Primera parte:

Teacher of chess: Mariano Víctor Piñeyro.

Maybe, so fascinating to the eyes, as like to the heart. We will see the infinite union between the chess and the literature. Not on books of chess. But on novels, poems that they report on chess.

For it, we will see certain specialists in the matter. Where each of them, it will expose his vision. And clear this one, the source will name them, in this case initially of every part.

Solo utilice publicaciones conocidas, vigentes.

From already, to the being an infinite task. I did not resort to books, as Larousse of the Chess, where there also we have fantastic references. Only use known, in force publications.

Bueno, es hora!. El reloj comenzó a funcionar. Comencemos...

Well, it is time!. The clock began to work. Let's begin...

Irving Chernev

" In the chess a teacher must play the opening as a book, the half game as a magician and the end as a machine " Irving Chernev

The artistic character of the chess goes back to those players' memorable games like Andersson, Morphy and Philidor, where the combinations were real artistic compositions. But actually, his protagonism goes beyond this. We show several cases in the literature, cinema and ballet where the chess has a relevant paper.

It has been debated very much on the components artistically, sports and scientist of the chess. Since we are not interested in being a part of so deep reflections we go away to staying with traditionally, elegantly and conciliator enunciated " in his practice a sport, in your execution an art and in your study a science ".

On the artistic component of the chess, Botvinnik indicates: " The Chess is the Art of the Analysis " and " The Chess is Art and Calculation " and even they have managed to say " The chess is the art of the human reason " Gustavus Selenus, Duke of Brunswick (1616).

The influence of the chess in the different artistic manifestations is indisputable, in numerous pictures, novels, stories, movies, ballet and sculpture is integrated the sport - science as part of the final work. Nevertheless, there are small the artistic expressions that are based on the chess, as fundamental part of the plot or representation of the work, or that incorporate the analytical aspect in a position or divided especially.

The attention calls that the majority of the movies inspired by the chess, or that incorporate a certain position are based on a novel. Some examples are " From Russia with Love " (From Russia with Love, 1963) stocks on Ian Fleming's novel, with James Bond, the legendary agent 007. In this case, the game is not an essential part of the movie, but the position of the pieces shows the critical moment of a memorable contest (to see proposed problems).

One of the last cinematographic obraz who has direct reference to the chess is " The Defense Luzhin " (2000), based on the novel of the Russian Vladimir Nabokov " The Defense " directed by Marleen Gorris and led by John Turturro and Emily Watson.

It is a romantic psychological drama, which protagonist, Luzhin, a brilliant and shy GM, travels to Italy to face for the world title. Nevertheless, he will find the love of his life and an opportunity to overcome her sickly obsessions created in traumas of her childhood. The adviser chess expert of the movie was GM Jonathan Speelman, who designed the position with which Luzhin must earn the match.

It emphasizes also " The Table of Flanders " of the Spanish writer Arturo Perez Reverte, also taken to the cinema. This one is an entertaining example of how the chess (in strict rigor "retrochess") can be an integral part of the plot. To this book we dedicate a previous chronicle, which the reader can consult visiting in previous deliveries, the chronicle " The one who Killed the Gentleman ".

From Lewis Carroll's idea, the MF Fernando Pedró wrote " A Trip to the Kingdom of the Chess ". It reports the dream of a small girl, who transformed into a laborer, takes part of a game of chess. This simple story, a deep sense makes: the trip to the adulthood. In this case, since in the previous ones, the plot of the book was used as script on the big screen.

A memorable example constitutes it the movie " 2001 Odyssey of the Space " of the brilliant Stanley Kubrick, that as it is known was a fanatic of the chess. In this movie, HAL9000 (the computer of the ship) is imposed in a game of chess for on Frank Poole (the astronaut), after a beautiful and unexpected play; inspired probably by Schlage's game, played in 1910 and identical to that of the movie.

[... In the literature also there are numerous works that incorporate the chess, besides the already mentioned ones they stand out of Stefan Zweig " The player of Chess " (1941), " As(Like) finishing once and for all with the Culture " of Woody Allen, " The Man who Was Calculating " of Malba Tahan, " The Player of Maelzel's Chess " of Edgar Allan Poe, " The book of the Liberal Invention and Art of the Game of Chess " of Alfonso Wise, " The art and the literature eaten away by the chess " of Marcel Duchamp y R. Roussel, "Murphy" of Beckett, " The adversary " of Ellery Queen and "Citadel" Antoine de Saint-Exupéry; besides our acquaintances Julio Cortazar, Miguel de Unamuno and Jorge Luis Borges, strongly influenced by the sport - science.

They exist also a innumerous of other books, stories and much more anonymous poems, not because of it of minor quality. Like examples, Antonio Gómez Hueso, wrote " Ace - sah mat ", I tell that it treats Sam's history to the-Rachid, a pacific and just king of the former Persia, but with a weakness: the chess.

The king Sam to the-Rachid, was enjoying the reputation of being the best player of re`no, up to the emergence of Hatim-l-Kura, a soldier whose talent questioned the category of the king. The pride and the fear of losing your condition of insuperable chess-player, drove the king to organize a challenge to an alone game and with time, which was not usual for the epoch. Gómez Bone, describes the game prettily and surprises with an anecdotal end.

Rafael Francisco Góchez in his story "You go the blacks ", he penetrates into the social statements and occupies a game of chess as representation metaphorical and parallel to an syndical conflict. Particularly exciting it turns out to be the siege to the black castling or in his reciprocal figure, the assault of the police repression to the factory in strike ....]

Once again, we are in the crossroads. Already we have entered to an unknown, unusual, playful world. They will come months and months, to think. No doubt, with intellectual growth and fascination before the literature.

I wait with firmness, to receive some critique or some mention. If during this investigation they arise, in an unwilling way. Erroneous or incomplete Informations. My mail is: marianovictorpineyro@hotmail.com
