Se conoce, por “LAS MEMORIAS AJEDRECÍSTICAS” del medico Libardo Mejía Valderrama quien ejercía su profesión en el municipio de Sopetrán, que en el año de 1930 él y un grupo de amigos ajedrecistas fundaron un club al que denominaron club de ajedrez Alexander Alekhine, en honor a quien por esa época era campeón mundial.
