Hello my readers, from now and from time to time we will see the columns of the famous newspaper Boston Globe, whose columnists are: Harold B. Dondis and Patrick Wolf. Hereby we will travel at present and in curiosities of the world of the chess.

Harold B. Dondis: I'm just an amateur, insists Harold Dondis '45, writer of the Boston Globe's chess column for the last 37 years. Dondis enrolled in HLS after earning a philosophy degree at Bowdoin College. "When people don't have anything to do, they become lawyers," he jokes, adding that he's spent his entire career practicing at the Boston firm known today as Rich May. Despite having graduated 56 years ago, Dondis still considers himself a student. "I still study every day," he says. "Want to wreck your life? Play chess," he says with a grin.

Patrick Wolff: Wolff, 42, who also is a grandmaster, was the champion in 1992 and again in 1995, when he tied for first. He is managing director of Clarium Capital, a hedge fund started by Peter Thiel, a co-founder of PayPal, and he lives in San Francisco with his wife and two children.

Certainly the 2010 London Classic occupied the spotlighted center of World Chess attention during December. It was promoted and directed by Malcolm Pein of the London Chess Center, courtesy of a private sponsor, in an attempt to revive England’s once-prominent position in the world of chess tourneys.

The Classic field consisted of Michael Adams, David Howell, Luke McShane, and Nigel Short, all of England, matching four top grandmaster outsiders: world champion Viswanathan Anand, India; Magnus Carlsen, Norway; Vladimir Kramnik, Russia; and Hikaru Nakamura, United States. It had worldwide coverage and featured commentary by former world champion Garry Kasparov in the last round. The English players were expected to be outclassed, but McShane, the seventh-lowest player in the lineup, jolted that assumption with a first-round victory over Carlsen.

Carlsen defeated Adams in the second round, but lost to Anand in the third. He was able to recover because the scoring awarded three points for a win, one point for a draw. Carlsen proceeded to defeat Nakamura in the fourth round and Howell in the fifth. Carlsen was tied for the lead after the next-to-last round and cemented his lead by defeating Short in the last round. He finished two points ahead of Anand and McShane.

Nakamura has established his ability not only as a habitual blitz and bullet player on the Internet, but also as a mature competitor against the strongest grandmasters.

An amusing incident of the tourney was that in the third round, Nakamura showed the use of only 15 minutes on his clock by the 25th move, while Howell had used up all his time except for five minutes. By that time, Howell had a knight, rook, and a couple of pawns for a surrender of his queen. Nevertheless, Howell built a fortress and like Hannibal at the gates of Rome, Nakamura’s roving queen could not find a way in. The game was drawn. On his website, Nakamura states that he knew the game from start to finish, but Howell had found all the right moves to hold the game.
